Tinubu Mourns Afenifere Leader Fasoranti, Hails His Legacy of Integrity, Service
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, a prominent Afenifere leader and elder statesman who died at the age of 100, describing him as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership and commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
In a condolence statement personally signed by him, Tinubu extended his sympathies to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom, the Ondo State Government, residents of the South-West and members of the Afenifere socio-political organisation.
The President described the late Yoruba leader as a patriarch and one of the last prominent figures in the progressive political tradition associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Tinubu said Fasoranti’s century-long life demonstrated discipline, selflessness and dedication to the Yoruba people, as well as the unity and development of Nigeria.
He recalled the deceased’s career in education, his service as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State and his leadership of Afenifere, noting that he remained committed to true federalism and social justice throughout his public life.
The President also credited Fasoranti with making significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, saying he stood by his convictions and supported causes he considered worthy, even at considerable personal risk.
Tinubu lamented the loss of the elder statesman’s wisdom, moral guidance and counsel, noting that the country would miss his contributions, particularly at a time when experienced voices remained important to national development.
Reflecting on Fasoranti’s 100th birthday celebration on May 11, 2026, the President said the milestone represented not only a remarkable lifespan but also a legacy of honour and service.
Tinubu further recalled visiting Fasoranti at his residence in Akure in 2022 to inform him of his presidential ambition. According to the President, the elder statesman predicted that he would become President during his lifetime, a prayer Tinubu said was fulfilled.
He added that he had hoped Fasoranti would live to witness his second term and the anticipated benefits of economic growth and prosperity, but expressed gratitude for the late leader’s long and fulfilled life.
The President concluded that Fasoranti had left a lasting mark on the country through his service, principles and dedication to the causes he believed in.
