The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on all 19 presidential candidates listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publicly declare their assets, liabilities, and those of their spouses and unmarried children under 18 years before the 2027 general elections.

In an open letter signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the advocacy group urged the contestants to disclose the legitimate sources of their wealth and publicly commit to rejecting vote-buying and electoral bribery ahead of the polls.

The letter was addressed to prominent contenders including President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Sandy Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC), alongside candidates representing other political platforms.

SERAP emphasized that while the Nigerian Constitution sets baseline asset declaration requirements for sworn public officers, candidates seeking the nation’s highest office should voluntarily adopt higher benchmarks of transparency, accountability, and integrity to earn public trust.

The organization further stressed that voter inducement directly violates constitutional principles and electoral laws, urging candidates to prove that public office will be treated as a sacred trust rather than private enterprise.
