Raise Pension Contribution to 20%, Police Urge FG

The Nigeria Police Pensions Limited has called on the Federal Government to increase its pension contribution for police officers from 10 per cent to 20 per cent. This request aims to provide better retirement benefits for officers after years of service. The current rate is seen as too low to support a decent living in old age.

Acting Managing Director of NPF Pensions Limited, Muhammad Dutse, made the appeal during a press briefing in Abuja. He explained that the proposal has already been sent to President Bola Tinubu through the National Pension Commission.
Officers would continue to contribute eight per cent, bringing the total to 28 per cent under the new arrangement.

Dutse noted that past reviews showed the existing contribution levels are not enough. When the Contributory Pension Scheme started, both sides paid 7.5 per cent, later increased to 10 and eight per cent. Ten years on, retirees still struggle, which is why the change is needed now. He believes higher contributions will reduce the need for government top-ups after retirement.

The move comes as retired police officers continue to complain about meagre pensions and gratuities. Many have called for the signing of the Police Exit Bill to improve their welfare. The new digital platform unveiled by NPF Pensions will also help serving officers easily check their savings and access services across the country.

This proposal highlights the ongoing challenges with pension schemes in the public sector. If approved, it could set a good example for other government workers facing similar issues. Police officers and retirees hope the government will act quickly to make retirement more comfortable and secure for those who served the nation.
