Iyabo Obasanjo Dumps APC Two Months After Losing Ogun Governorship Ticket

Former senator representing Ogun Central and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), barely two months after stepping down from the race for the party’s governorship ticket in Ogun State.

Obasanjo announced her resignation in a letter addressed to party leaders, citing what she described as persistent marginalisation, disrespect, and unfair treatment within the Ogun State chapter of the APC.

Her exit comes shortly after the APC adopted Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 Ogun governorship election. The decision effectively ended Obasanjo’s bid to secure the party’s ticket.

The former lawmaker had suspended her governorship ambition in April, stating that she was acting in the interest of party unity following the consensus arrangement.

At the time, she publicly congratulated Adeola and pledged support for the APC. However, tensions reportedly persisted after the party’s decision.

Obasanjo later raised concerns over the conduct of some party officials during the selection process, alleging that some of her supporters were denied access to a key party meeting and that two of them were assaulted.

In her resignation letter, Obasanjo expressed disappointment over what she described as the hostile political environment within the party, saying it had become impossible for her to continue as a member.

Her departure marks a significant development in Ogun State politics ahead of the 2027 elections. Having returned to active politics after years away from partisan engagement, Obasanjo was widely seen as one of the notable aspirants seeking to succeed the current administration in the state.

Political observers believe her resignation could alter political calculations in Ogun State and potentially open the door for a new political alignment ahead of the next governorship election.

The Ogun State chapter of the APC has yet to issue an official reaction to her resignation.
