Group Plants 100 Trees at UNICAL to Fight Climate Change

A group of environmental enthusiasts has planted 100 fruit and economic trees at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) as part of activities to mark World Environment Day.

The tree planting exercise was carried out by members of Leo District 404A2 Nigeria in partnership with the Biodiversity Rescue Club and Crust Eco-Network. This initiative aims to promote a greener environment and support the fight against climate change.

The District President of Leo District 404A2 Nigeria, Joyce Ediebuk, explained that trees are very important for protecting people from harsh weather like storms and heavy rains. She noted that rising temperatures, flooding, and land degradation are affecting many communities. The group also carried out sensitisation programmes on waste management and recycling to encourage better environmental habits.

Outreach coordinator Bright Nwokeocha called on government agencies, schools, youth groups, and other organisations to support efforts in protecting the environment. He described tree planting as a smart investment in climate resilience, public health, and biodiversity.

According to him, human activities such as waste dumping are harming nature, and everyone needs to take action.

Programmes Manager of Biodiversity Rescue Club, Courage Yegwa, urged governments at all levels to back youth-led environmental projects. The choice of fruit and economic trees was made to provide both environmental benefits and economic value to the university and nearby communities. Executive Director of Crust Eco-Network, Akobundu Stanley, also stressed the need for collective efforts from all residents to replace trees lost to deforestation.

This event highlights the growing awareness of environmental issues in Nigeria. By planting these trees, the groups hope to inspire more people to care for nature and build a sustainable future. Their call for stronger protection measures serves as a reminder that small actions today can lead to big improvements for the environment and coming generations.
