LA Stadium Workers Threaten Strike Before World Cup Kickoff

Workers at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles have voted strongly to go on strike just before the FIFA World Cup begins. The food and beverage staff, represented by the Unite Here Local 11 union, are unhappy with their current pay and working conditions.

With about 2,000 members, they gave a huge 96 percent approval for possible strike action.

The union is asking for better wages and strong assurances that immigration officers will not enter the stadium during the tournament. They are also worried about sharing personal information with FIFA for accreditation, fearing it could be passed to immigration authorities.

Contract talks with the stadium food operator and FIFA have not gone well so far, leading to this strong position.
SoFi Stadium, known as one of the most expensive sports venues in the world, is set to host eight World Cup matches. The workers include cooks, bartenders, dishwashers, and others who play a key role in making the big event smooth for fans. Union leaders say the World Cup will bring huge profits, but the staff still need fair treatment and safety.

New negotiations are planned for Monday, just days before the first match on American soil on June 12. The union has warned that without progress, the luxury suites could be left with only basic snacks if workers walk out. This threat has created tension as the global football event draws near.

The situation highlights the challenges of organising such a major tournament. Fans and organisers are hoping for a quick agreement so the World Cup can go ahead without disruptions. Both sides are expected to work hard to reach a deal that satisfies the workers and keeps the excitement alive for the competition.
