Tunde Ayeni Alleges Theft of Valuables During Kuje Prison Raid

Former Chairman of Skye Bank Plc, Tunde Ayeni, has allegedly been robbed of personal valuables, including a wedding ring and a wristwatch reportedly worth over N120 million, during a search operation at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.

According to sources within the facility, the operation was conducted by senior officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service led by the Deputy Controller-General in charge of operations alongside officers attached to the correctional centre.

Sources alleged that suspended former Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari also lost about N2 million during the exercise.

Insiders claimed the officials entered the prison yard accompanied by operatives with Department of State Services dogs and dressed in bulletproof vests, creating panic among inmates.

According to the sources, the operation was officially described as a search exercise within the custodial facility.

However, some inmates alleged that cash and valuables belonging to high-profile detainees were taken without proper documentation or accountability.

The development has reportedly heightened tension within the correctional centre, with some inmates accusing prison officials of intimidation and abuse of power.

Another source familiar with the matter said Ayeni was considering filing a formal petition against the officers allegedly involved in the operation.

Ayeni, a businessman and former chairman of the defunct Skye Bank Plc, is currently facing trial over alleged fraud involving about N15.7 billion.

He was recently granted bail by an Abuja High Court under strict conditions.

Kyari, a former head of the Intelligence Response Team, is also facing trial over allegations linked to drug trafficking and other offences.

The Kuje Correctional Centre has previously attracted public attention over security concerns, including jailbreak incidents and allegations involving the treatment of high-profile detainees.
