11 Killed as Vehicle Plunges off Bridge

No fewer than 11 passengers lost their lives in a road accident along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway on Sunday night after a vehicle reportedly somersaulted and plunged off a bridge.

The crash occurred at Eruku Bridge when a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ veered off the road and fell from the bridge, trapping the occupants inside the vehicle.

All the passengers on board, identified as 10 adult men and one woman, were confirmed dead at the scene.

The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident on Monday through its spokesperson, Odunsi Afolabi.

According to Afolabi, preliminary investigations suggested that driving under the influence of alcohol and overloading were likely responsible for the accident.

He explained that the impact of the crash caused the vehicle doors to lock, making rescue efforts difficult.

Afolabi said FRSC officials, assisted by members of the local community, had to dismantle parts of the vehicle to retrieve the bodies of the victims.

The remains of the deceased were later deposited at the morgue of the State Specialist Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the corps, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists using the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to drive carefully, especially at night.

He also extended condolences to the families of those who died in the accident.
