Chaos erupted in Enugu State over the weekend as a ward chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was reportedly assaulted by aggrieved party members. 

The incident occurred during a scheduled distribution of funds intended for grassroots mobilization, highlighting deepening internal fractures within the state’s party structure.

Witnesses report that the gathering, which began as a routine administrative meeting, turned violent when a dispute arose over the transparency and criteria used for the disbursement. Tensions escalated rapidly as party faithful accused the leadership of favoritism and the diversion of funds. In the ensuing melee, the ward chairman was physically accosted, forcing security personnel and nearby bystanders to intervene to prevent more serious injuries.

The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending an official police report, was reportedly rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the scuffle. Supporters of the chairman have condemned the attack, describing it as a “barbaric act” orchestrated by individuals intent on destabilizing the party’s local operations ahead of upcoming political cycles.

The Enugu State APC leadership has yet to release a formal statement regarding the specific disciplinary actions to be taken against those involved. However, sources within the party indicate that an internal fact-finding committee may be established to investigate the root cause of the breakdown in order and to address the grievances regarding the distribution process.
