Wike Loyalists Spread Across APC, PDP in Strategic Move to Control Rivers 2027 Race

The political temperature in Rivers State has risen sharply as the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike moves to deploy his formidable political machinery ahead of the 2027 general elections, with trusted loyalists picking up governorship nomination forms on both the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party platforms in what analysts describe as a calculated dual-front strategy to maintain a grip on the state.

At the centre of the unfolding drama is Alabo Dakorinama George-Kelly, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Works and a known Wike ally, who has obtained the APC expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2027 governorship race.

On the PDP side, House of Representatives member Kingsley Chinda, equally regarded as a key figure in Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, has indicated interest in the governorship under that platform. The Rainbow Coalition is a cross-party structure loyal to the minister, bringing together members of both the APC and the PDP under one political umbrella.

Sources within the coalition confirmed that George-Kelly’s decision to obtain APC forms was made with the minister’s knowledge and blessing, noting that no senior member of the alliance would take such a significant step without the consent of its leader. Though Wike publicly denied formally endorsing any candidate during his monthly media chat in Abuja, he made no attempt to conceal the fact that he has loyalists within both parties and that the coalition’s preferred candidates would emerge from internal consultations.

The development sets the stage for a collision course between Wike and incumbent Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whose estrangement from his political godfather has defined the state’s turbulent political landscape since 2023.

Fubara, who defected from the PDP to the APC in December 2025 as part of a peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu, has since been backed by a coalition of elders who procured APC nomination forms on his behalf for a second term bid, a move that directly contradicts an alleged condition in the peace agreement that he would not seek re-election.

Wike had previously declared publicly that allowing Fubara to return for another term would amount to his own political death, and the minister has since made clear his intention to personally influence who governs Rivers State in 2027.

With forms now procured on multiple fronts, George-Kelly and Chinda positioned as alternative candidates, and Fubara’s supporters pushing back defiantly, Rivers State is once again at the heart of one of Nigeria’s most volatile political standoffs as the 2027 election season begins to take shape in earnest.
