Owoseni Resigns from Makinde’s Cabinet
In a swift and significant move within the Oyo State political landscape, Retired Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni has officially resigned from the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.
The resignation, which was tendered through a formal letter dated May 7, 2026, marks the end of his dual role as the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor and the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF).
Owoseni’s departure comes just hours after reports surfaced regarding the political emergence of Adekanmbi as a gubernatorial contender. While the retired police chief’s resignation letter was professional and appreciative of the opportunity to serve, political observers in the state are already linking the move to the shifting alliances and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Owoseni has long been a pivotal figure in Makinde’s security architecture, representing the state at the Forum of National and Subnational Security Officials.
In his letter addressed to the Governor through the Office of the Chief of Staff, Owoseni expressed his gratitude for the chance to contribute to the state’s development. He noted that his resignation would necessitate replacements for his positions on the Board of the Oyo State Security Network (Amotekun) and within the national security forum.
He further expressed his readiness to facilitate a smooth transition, particularly regarding the management of the Security Trust Fund’s accounts.
As news of the resignation spreads, speculation is mounting that Owoseni may be positioning himself for a more prominent role in the upcoming electoral cycle. His exit from a high-profile security position, occurring so closely to major candidate announcements, suggests a realignment of the state’s political heavyweights as the race to succeed Governor Makinde begins to take a definitive shape.
