UNIUYO Vice-Chancellor Calls for More Funding, Alumni Support for Universities
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has expressed serious concern over the funding challenges facing Nigerian universities.
He highlighted the difficulties in providing quality education, maintaining infrastructure, and paying staff due to limited resources. The VC stressed that without adequate funding, universities cannot meet their goals of producing well-trained graduates. He called on the government and other stakeholders to address these gaps urgently.
The Vice-Chancellor appealed to alumni of universities to step in and support their alma maters. He noted that many former students have done well in their careers and can help through donations, projects, and mentorship programmes. According to him, alumni intervention can go a long way in bridging funding shortfalls and improving facilities for current students. This call is part of efforts to make universities more self-sustaining.
Many stakeholders agree that poor funding has affected teaching, research, and overall academic standards in public universities. The VC’s statement has sparked discussions on the need for better budget allocation to the education sector. He believes that with combined efforts from government, alumni, and the private sector, Nigerian universities can regain their glory and compete globally.
The appeal comes at a time when several universities are struggling with decaying infrastructure and inadequate research facilities. The Vice-Chancellor urged alumni to see their support as an investment in the future of the country. He expressed confidence that such partnerships would bring positive changes to the university system.
This development highlights the important role of collective responsibility in solving education challenges. Many hope that the government will take the concerns seriously and increase funding. With stronger alumni involvement, universities like UNIUYO can provide better opportunities for students and contribute more to national development.
