Police Arrest 22-Year-Old Over Suspected Owerri Cult Killing

The Imo State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old man, Bright Adiene, over the suspected cult-related killing of Nnamdi Okeke in Owerri.

The incident was reported to the police on Saturday, October 17, 2026, with the command saying another suspect, identified as Anyima, is being sought in connection with the killing.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying investigators were working to establish what led to the incident and identify everyone who may have been involved.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify all those involved,” Okoye said.

The development comes amid concerns over renewed clashes involving rival cult groups in parts of Owerri. The reported violence followed the killing of a suspected cult leader by members of a rival group several weeks ago.

However, the police have not established any confirmed connection between that earlier incident and Okeke’s killing.

Following the latest incident, the Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, held a security strategy meeting on Sunday, October 18, with area commanders, divisional police officers and commanders of tactical units to review the security situation across the state.

Bosso directed the operational commanders to step up intelligence-driven operations and conduct targeted searches of locations suspected to be used as hideouts by criminal groups.

He also ordered increased patrols in identified security flashpoints and directed officers to respond swiftly to emerging threats in order to prevent further attacks.

According to Okoye, the commissioner also instructed the command to strengthen cooperation with traditional and community leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to improve the flow of security information and facilitate early intervention.

The command appealed to parents and guardians to pay closer attention to their children’s activities, movements and associations, particularly where there are indications of involvement in cult groups.

Parents were also urged to share useful information with security agencies to help prevent cult-related violence.

Bosso warned that individuals found to be involved in cult clashes or other forms of violent crime would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police urged residents to remain calm and vigilant while cooperating with security personnel and providing credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation and wider security operations.

Members of the public with relevant information were advised to contact the nearest police station or call 0803 477 3600.
