Afenifere Leader, Reuben Fasoranti Reportedly Dies at 100
Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the elder statesman and prominent leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, has reportedly died at the age of 100.
Fasoranti, who celebrated his centenary on May 11, 2026, was widely recognised for his contributions to Nigeria’s political development, education and pro-democracy struggle.
Born in Uso, Ondo State, in 1926, he built a career in education before becoming actively involved in politics and public service.
He was a committed associate of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and participated in the activities of the Action Group during the First Republic and the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic.
Between 1979 and 1983, Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State under the administration of the late Governor Adekunle Ajasin.
Beyond public office, he was known for his involvement in the struggle against military rule and his advocacy for democratic governance in Nigeria. His political activities helped establish his reputation as a prominent voice in Yoruba socio-political affairs.
Fasoranti also made significant contributions to education, working as a teacher and establishing schools in Ondo State, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy in Igoba, Akure.
His personal life was marked by tragedy, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in July 2019.
Despite these setbacks, he remained an influential figure in national and regional political discussions, particularly on issues concerning governance, democracy and the interests of the Yoruba people.
His reported death marks the end of a century-long life associated with education, political activism and public service.
