Sanwo-Olu Mourns Former Lagos Education Commissioner Idowu Sobowale
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed sadness over the death of veteran journalist, communication scholar and former state Commissioner for Education, Professor Idowu Sobowale, who died on Thursday at the age of 85.
The governor described Sobowale’s death as a significant loss to Lagos State and Nigeria, noting that his contributions to journalism, education and public service had left a lasting impact on the country.
Sanwo-Olu said the late professor was among Nigeria’s pioneering mass communication scholars and had also distinguished himself as a war correspondent during his journalism career.
He noted that Sobowale’s passing had created a major gap in the education sector, particularly in the field of mass communication, where the late academic made substantial contributions.
The governor also extended his condolences to Sobowale’s family, colleagues, associates and members of the academic community.
Sanwo-Olu described the deceased as an accomplished scholar who applied his wealth of experience to the development of education, journalism and public administration in Nigeria.
He said Sobowale contributed significantly to the growth of education in Lagos State and the country, particularly during his tenure as Commissioner for Education.
The governor further praised the late professor for his dedication and selflessness in both private and public service, saying his work had made a lasting difference across several sectors.
He prayed for the repose of Sobowale’s soul and asked God to grant his family, friends, former students and colleagues the strength to cope with the loss.
