FG, UNHCR Seek $10 Billion Investment for Communities Affected by Displacement

The Federal Government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are pursuing a plan to attract up to $10 billion in investments to support communities affected by displacement across Nigeria.

The initiative is aimed at improving infrastructure, expanding economic opportunities and strengthening social services in areas hosting internally displaced persons, refugees and returnees.

Officials said the proposed investment would focus on long-term development rather than short-term humanitarian assistance, with priority given to projects that can improve livelihoods, education, healthcare, housing and access to basic services.

According to stakeholders involved in the programme, the objective is to help vulnerable communities become more resilient while creating conditions that support sustainable economic growth and social stability.

The initiative is expected to encourage greater participation from development finance institutions, private investors and international partners interested in supporting recovery and development in displacement-affected areas.

Government representatives noted that many host communities face significant pressure on resources and public infrastructure due to the growing number of displaced persons seeking safety and support.

They stressed that investment-driven solutions can help address these challenges by creating jobs, improving living conditions and expanding opportunities for both displaced persons and host populations.

UNHCR officials emphasized the need to move beyond emergency interventions by promoting programmes that deliver lasting economic and social benefits to affected communities. The agency has consistently advocated development-focused approaches to displacement challenges around the world.

The proposed investment framework is expected to support projects across multiple sectors, including agriculture, renewable energy, transportation, education and community infrastructure.

Authorities said collaboration between government institutions, international organisations and the private sector would be essential to achieving the investment target and ensuring that resources are directed toward impactful and sustainable projects.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to address the effects of displacement, strengthen community resilience and promote inclusive development in regions affected by conflict, insecurity and humanitarian challenges.
