Pharmacists at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital have underscored their growing contribution to patient care, medication safety, health education, research and innovation.

They made the point during activities marking the 2026 World Pharmacists Day.

The event, held on Friday, was themed “Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures.” Led by the Head of the Pharmacy Department, Dr Edith Yovwin, the team paid a courtesy visit to the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof Idia Ize-Iyamu.

Representing the CMD, the DCMAC for Research and Ethics, Prof Adebola Ehizele, received the delegation and thanked the pharmacists for their engagement. The visit provided an opportunity to stress the essential role of pharmacists in optimising treatment and ensuring medicines are used safely.

Prof Ize-Iyamu, through her representative, praised the pharmacists for their contributions to quality healthcare both globally and within UBTH.

The discussions also highlighted their work in health education and research.

World Pharmacists Day is observed every year on September 25 to recognise the vital contributions of pharmacists to global health, medication safety and patient care. The UBTH event formed part of this annual celebration.
