Niger Governor Declares 24-Hour Curfew in Minna After Unrest
Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago has declared a 24-hour curfew across Minna, the state capital, following unrest reported in parts of the city.
The restriction takes effect immediately after the Friday Jumu’ah prayers and will remain in place until further notice.
Residents have been directed to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary movements during the curfew period. Security agencies have been instructed to enforce the order and protect lives and property across the metropolis.
The measure follows protests and disturbances linked to the deaths of dozens of suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna. The incident has generated public anger and led to demonstrations in some areas of the city.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and comply with official directives. A committee of inquiry has been set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, while relevant officials have been suspended pending the outcome of the probe.
Further updates are expected from the state government as efforts continue to restore calm and address the concerns of affected families and communities.
