The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has cautioned Governor Seyi Makinde against using a €55 million French concessional loan for purposes outside its intended healthcare objectives.

Alli, through his campaign organisation, expressed concern that the facility, valued at about N85 billion, could be channelled into politically motivated projects as the state approaches the 2027 general elections.

The loan was secured to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve primary healthcare services across Oyo State. According to the APC candidate, the facility represents a significant financial commitment that future administrations will be required to repay.

He alleged that plans were being made to accelerate spending of the funds on projects close to the end of the current administration, warning that such actions could raise questions about accountability and transparency.

While affirming support for genuine efforts aimed at improving healthcare delivery, Alli called on the state government to make public all details relating to the loan, including repayment terms, disbursement plans, procurement processes, contractors, project timelines and the healthcare institutions expected to benefit from the intervention.

He maintained that residents deserve full information on how the funds would be utilised and stressed that public borrowing should be guided by openness, accountability and measurable benefits for citizens.

The APC candidate further urged the Oyo State House of Assembly, civil society groups, healthcare professionals and the media to closely monitor the implementation of projects linked to the facility.

According to him, the state’s healthcare sector requires functional hospitals, modern equipment, trained personnel and improved access to essential medicines rather than projects that fail to deliver lasting value.

Alli added that every loan obtained on behalf of the people must translate into visible and sustainable improvements that directly enhance the welfare of residents across the state.
