Peter Obi Left ₦127 Billion Loan Balance, Says Anambra Government
The Anambra State Government has disputed claims that former Governor Peter Obi left the state without outstanding liabilities when he completed his tenure.
According to the government, his administration left behind loans as well as arrears of salaries, pensions and gratuities.
Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr Law Mefor, said the current administration under Governor Chukwuma Soludo has already cleared about ₦22 billion in inherited gratuity arrears owed to retired state and local government workers and teachers.
Mefor noted that some legacy liabilities dating back to previous administrations remain unpaid. These include salary arrears for workers of the defunct Water Corporation that persisted through Obi’s time in office, as well as outstanding payments to primary school teachers dating back to earlier years.
He said the Obi administration verified and certified 16 months of salary arrears for primary school teachers but paid only five months. A committee has now been set up to complete a fresh verification so the remaining amounts can be settled.
Citing the latest Debt Management Office report, Mefor stated that the total balance of loans linked to the Obi administration stood at ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026. He added that the state continues to service these debts monthly and that borrowing for development projects is not inherently wrong.
