Arsenal made the perfect start to their title defence bid with a hard fought 1-0 win away at Napoli in Naples. Mikel Arteta’s side, missing several key faces through rotation, ground out a professional victory at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium against a Napoli side that pushed hard in the closing stages but could not find an equaliser. It extends the Gunners’ impressive record of never losing their opening game of a European campaign in recent seasons and gives them a platform to build on as they chase a maiden Champions League title.

Paris Saint Germain were utterly ruthless at the Parc des Princes, thrashing Slovan Bratislava 6-1 as new signing Ferran Torres marked his Champions League debut for the club with a hat-trick. The Spanish forward struck three times inside the opening hour to put the tie beyond doubt, with Fabian Ruiz among those to add further gloss to the scoreline late on. It was a statement opening performance from Luis Enrique’s side as they begin the defence of their crown in some style.
