Chelsea Stage Stunning Comeback to Beat Leeds 6-3 in Carabao Cup Thriller

Chelsea produced one of the games of the season so far, coming from two goals down to beat Leeds United 6-3 in a pulsating Carabao Cup third round tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Xabi Alonso’s side looked to be heading out of the competition when Tarik Muharemovic put Leeds ahead in the 23rd minute, and their night appeared to be getting worse when Brenden Aaronson doubled the visitors’ advantage shortly after the restart to make it 2-0. Chelsea, however, responded in devastating fashion.

Cole Palmer, introduced at half time, converted a penalty in the 53rd minute before adding a second just two minutes later to level the contest at 2-2, sparking a remarkable turnaround inside the space of only a few minutes.

The comeback gathered pace when Pedro Neto fired Chelsea into the lead for the first time, and the home side did not let up from there, continuing to press forward and add to their tally as Leeds tried in vain to find a way back into a game that had swung entirely in the hosts’ favour. By full time it finished 6-3, with both sides having contributed to one of the most entertaining domestic cup ties of the season so far.

The result sends Chelsea through to the fourth round of the competition and offers another reminder of the attacking quality Alonso now has at his disposal at Stamford Bridge, even against opposition who pushed them all the way for large parts of the contest.

Leeds, for their part, will be frustrated to have let a two goal cushion slip having started the game so brightly, though they can take some encouragement from the manner in which they matched Chelsea for long spells of a nine goal thriller.
