Barcelona made an emphatic statement in their opening game of this season’s UEFA Champions League, thrashing Feyenoord 5-1 at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday night in a performance that underlined just how dangerous Hansi Flick’s side have become in the early weeks of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Catalan giants, who arrived unbeaten in four straight La Liga matches and already boasting one of the most fearsome attacking records in Europe, wasted little time asserting their dominance.

They led 2-0 at half time and never looked back, adding three further goals after the break to leave the Dutch visitors with no way back into the contest. Raphinha was the standout performer on the night, scoring twice to continue his blistering start to the season, while Lamine Yamal produced a moment of real quality with a superbly struck free kick to make it 4-0.

Gabriel Jesus, introduced from the bench, capped off the rout with a debut goal in stoppage time, heading home a cross supplied by Yamal. Feyenoord’s consolation came through Steijn, who pulled one back for the Rotterdam club late on, but it did little to soften the scale of the defeat.

The result extends what has already been a near flawless start to the season under Flick, whose side have now scored heavily in almost every outing this campaign. Speaking before kickoff, the German coach made no secret of his belief in the squad he has built, saying Yamal “is a player who can decide games all on his own.” That endorsement proved prophetic, with the young captain once again at the heart of Barcelona’s most dangerous moments, contributing both a goal and two assists across the ninety minutes.

For Feyenoord, the trip to Catalonia always promised to be a difficult litmus test of their European ambitions.

The Dutch side had gone unbeaten through their opening five Eredivisie matches this term, but coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst had been candid about the size of the task facing his players against a Barcelona team playing with such fluency and confidence.

His side set out with a disciplined defensive block designed to frustrate the hosts and search for openings on the counter, but they were simply overrun by the quality and intensity Barcelona brought from the opening whistle.

Barcelona will now turn their attention back to domestic matters before returning to Champions League action, buoyed by a result that sends a clear early message to the rest of the continent about their credentials this season. For Feyenoord, the defeat is a reminder of the gulf that still exists between the top of the Eredivisie and Europe’s genuine heavyweights, though their qualification for the competition itself remains a notable achievement in its own right.
