UNIZIK Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Incomplete August Salary
Academic staff at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have started an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their full August 2026 salaries.
The action was announced by the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
In a statement signed by the chapter chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union said the decision was taken at a congress held on Monday, September 7. The lecturers are acting in line with a standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council on unpaid salaries.
According to the union, branches are empowered to withdraw their services if salaries are not fully paid by the third day of the following month. With September 7 already passed and the complete August salary still outstanding, the lecturers resolved to stop work.
The statement noted that this is not the first time members have faced incomplete salary payments, describing the experience as frustrating. The union called on the university authorities and the Visitor, President Bola Tinubu, to ensure the full payment is made without further delay.
ASUU-UNIZIK directed all members to immediately withdraw from both academic and administrative duties. The strike will continue until the complete August 2026 salary is paid to all affected staff.
When contacted, the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations declined to comment.
