Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a stoppage-time rocket on his Everton debut as David Moyes’ side twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Manchester United and deny Michael Carrick back-to-back Premier League wins.

United looked set for three points when substitute, Benjamin Šeško headed in Luke Shaw’s cross in the 88th minute. In the sixth minute of added time Maitland-Niles, from the bench after a deadline-day move from Lyon, met a cleared ball from about 25 yards and bent it beyond Senne Lammens.

Bryan Mbeumo had put United in front early in the second half with a solo run. Tyrique George levelled in the 82nd minute after Hayden Hackney’s pass, slamming in at the near post. Jack Grealish, back at Everton on loan, had been introduced to help turn the game.

Carrick’s side had hit the bar through Bruno Fernandes in the first half and were the better team for long spells. They leave with four points from three matches. Everton stay unbeaten, with five points, after a week in which their transfer window ended in public frustration.

Maitland-Niles cost a modest fee and was meant to plug a right-back hole. Instead he wrote the last line of the afternoon. For United it was a win that slipped in the time added on. For Carrick the lesson is familiar: a late header is not a result until the clock is dead.
