Arsenal recovered from a second-minute concession to beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates and keep their perfect Premier League start alive.

Morgan Rogers scored almost from the kick-off, finishing after Jorrel Hato’s headed pass from a set piece. Chelsea had arrived as the free-scoring side under Xabi Alonso. For a quarter of an hour they looked like the team that would snap Arsenal’s defensive run.

Kai Havertz levelled in the 25th minute from Declan Rice’s assist after Riccardo Calafiori had a goal ruled out for offside. Martin Ødegaard then put Arsenal in front five minutes into the second half, finishing a break started by Christos Tzolis.

Chelsea had spells and substitutions. They did not find a second goal. Alonso’s side have now taken seven points from three games the hard way: lots of goals, and now a first league defeat of the campaign. Arsenal have seven from three and have answered the first serious test of their start.

The derby was billed as Arteta’s control against Alonso’s chaos. The first two minutes belonged to Chelsea. The next 88 belonged to a home side that refused to stay on the floor. Rogers’ strike will travel on highlight reels. Ødegaard’s reply is the one that sits in the table.
