Dangote Eyes Global Refining Crown with Expansion Plan for 2028
Aliko Dangote has unveiled plans to expand the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and position it as the world’s largest single-train refinery by 2028.
The announcement comes as the company prepares for a landmark public share offering aimed at raising fresh capital to support the refinery’s next phase of growth. The expansion plan is expected to increase the facility’s refining capacity from about 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next two years.
Dangote said the ambitious project is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global energy market, boost exports of refined petroleum products and reduce dependence on imported fuels across Africa.
Since reaching full operational capacity, the refinery has become a major supplier of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel, serving both domestic and international markets. Industry analysts say the facility has already transformed Nigeria from a major fuel importer into a significant exporter of refined petroleum products.
The planned expansion is expected to enhance production, create additional jobs and further increase foreign exchange earnings through exports to African and global markets.
The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos State, was built at an estimated cost of about $20 billion and is currently regarded as the largest single-train refinery in operation.
With the proposed capacity increase, Dangote believes the facility will surpass existing global refining giants and emerge as the world’s leading refinery by 2028, reinforcing its role as one of Africa’s most significant industrial projects.
