The Enugu State Police Command says it detained 6,240 suspects, recovered 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of ammunition, and rescued 211 kidnapped victims during 17 months of security operations in the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa.

Giwa presented the figures on Friday while receiving the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, AIG Miller Dantawaye, who paid a working visit to the command.

He said the period under review covered the command’s operational activities since he assumed office as Enugu State Commissioner of Police on March 11, 2025.

According to the commissioner, those detained included 158 kidnapping suspects, 186 armed robbery suspects, 188 murder suspects and 57 suspects linked to rape and defilement.

He added that 273 suspects were detained in connection with cult-related activities, while 63 were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms.

The remaining 5,315 suspects were detained for various other offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.

Giwa said the weapons recovered included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle, among other firearms.

The command also recovered 209 vehicles and other vehicular exhibits, including cars, tricycles and motorcycles, during the period.

The commissioner attributed the operational gains to sustained intelligence-led policing, proactive security measures and collaboration with neighbouring states.

He cited the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, intensified border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, and improved emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre.

Giwa appealed for continued support from the police zone, particularly in manpower, operational logistics and personnel welfare, to enable the command to build on its achievements.

Responding, Dantawaye urged officers and other personnel to maintain professionalism, discipline, accountability and ethical conduct in the discharge of their duties.

He also directed them to comply with Force regulations and respect citizens’ rights while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

The AIG expressed his commitment to working with the command to further strengthen security in Enugu State and sustain public confidence in the police.
