Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over worsening economic conditions in the country, warning that rising hardship is pushing some young Nigerians into desperate measures, including allegedly selling their kidneys to survive.

Atiku said reports suggesting that youths are resorting to selling body organs to raise money reflect the severity of the economic challenges facing many households across the country. He argued that young Nigerians should be focused on building careers, creating businesses and pursuing their ambitions rather than struggling for basic survival.

The former vice president linked the situation to the rising cost of living, citing increases in food prices, transportation costs, rent, healthcare expenses and other essential needs. He maintained that the growing financial pressure on citizens requires urgent policy responses aimed at improving living standards and creating opportunities for young people.

Atiku also called for economic reforms that prioritize job creation, affordable healthcare, accessible education and social protection for vulnerable groups. According to him, addressing poverty and unemployment is essential to preventing desperate actions by struggling citizens.

His remarks come amid ongoing political debates over the state of the economy and the impact of recent reforms on ordinary Nigerians as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.

The former presidential candidate urged government authorities to focus on policies that ease the burden on citizens and restore hope among the country’s youth population.
