Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to review the operations of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) if elected president in 2027, promising measures aimed at easing the financial burden on students.

Atiku said his administration would examine the existing student loan framework to ensure it effectively supports access to higher education without creating excessive financial pressure on beneficiaries.

He also indicated that provisions for debt forgiveness and other forms of relief would be considered for eligible students under a reformed system.

According to him, education remains a critical tool for national development, and policies affecting students should promote learning opportunities rather than discourage access to tertiary education.

The former vice president stressed the need for a sustainable funding model that balances support for students with the long-term viability of educational financing programmes.

He argued that many young Nigerians face significant economic challenges and require greater assistance to complete their studies and contribute meaningfully to society.

Atiku further stated that his education agenda would focus on expanding access, improving quality and strengthening support mechanisms for students across the country.
