The Federal Government has expressed deep concern over the political and security situation in the Republic of Niger.

The statement followed reports of gunfire and explosions in the capital, Niamey, on Saturday.

According to reports, the Diori Hamani International Airport and the presidential palace were targeted during the incident. Coup plotters attempted to seize power from the country’s leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, but were repelled by Nigerien security forces with assistance from Africa Corps.

The military junta in Niger, known as the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland, confirmed that some personnel within the military forces had attempted to overthrow the current leadership.

In a statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Oluwafemi Adeniyi, the Federal Government said it views the situation with deep concern. As a neighbour sharing close historical, fraternal and cultural ties with Niger, Nigeria desires peace, security, democracy and development in the country.

The government noted that a peaceful and stable Niger would have a positive impact on Nigeria, the sub-region and the Sahel. It urged the government and people of Niger to work together towards an inclusive return to stability and constitutional order, stressing that the use of force to settle political differences does not serve that goal.
