The Federal University of Technology, Babura, Jigawa State, has approved a 100 per cent waiver of tuition and school fees for newly admitted students studying B.Sc Mathematics and B.Sc Physics.

The university said the initiative was designed to make science education more accessible and encourage more young Nigerians to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences (STEMM).

The development was contained in a statement signed by the university’s Registrar, Mrs Fatima Muhammad, and released to journalists on Wednesday.

According to the management, the shortage of skilled professionals in science-related fields remains a challenge to Nigeria’s development despite the importance of STEMM disciplines to research, technology and innovation.

The university said the fee waiver was therefore introduced as part of its community service efforts to expand access to science education, particularly for students from northern Nigeria and other underserved communities.

The policy covers tuition and other school fees for eligible students throughout the duration of their studies in the two programmes.

The management also expects the initiative to increase enrolment in core science disciplines, which often attract fewer students despite their importance to national technological and industrial development.

The registrar said candidates who initially applied for other courses or institutions could also take advantage of the opportunity if they met the university’s admission requirements.

Eligible candidates were advised to process a change of institution and course to the Federal University of Technology, Babura through any JAMB Computer-Based Test centre.

The university said the initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen STEMM education and develop skilled graduates capable of contributing to research, teaching, innovation and industrial growth.

Prospective students were advised to contact the university’s admissions office for information on eligibility, the change-of-course process and other admission requirements.

The institution urged qualified candidates to take advantage of the waiver during the current admission cycle.
