Academic activities have been disrupted in several state-owned universities across Nigeria following the commencement of industrial action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The lecturers are protesting the failure of some state governments and university authorities to implement provisions contained in the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, including payment of outstanding arrears.

Universities affected by the industrial action include Nasarawa State University, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Gombe State University, Plateau State University, Kaduna State University, Kano State University of Science and Technology, Northwest University and Taraba State University.

Others include the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Adekunle Ajasin University, Ambrose Alli University, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education.

Abia State University, University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Imo State University, Niger Delta University, University of Africa and Bayelsa Medical University are also affected.

At Adekunle Ajasin University in Ondo State, the ASUU branch said it would continue the strike until the state government implements the agreement and settles outstanding payments owed to lecturers from January 2026.

The branch is demanding the immediate implementation of the new salary structure introduced in January as well as the payment of accumulated arrears.

The union noted that some federal and state universities had already begun implementing the new package, while others were yet to comply.

At Plateau State University, Bokkos, lecturers declared a total and indefinite strike after the university management failed to satisfactorily address a six-point list of demands.

The demands include the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme, implementation of the 2025 agreement, payment of arrears dating back to January 2026 and provision of secure accommodation for staff.

The union also demanded improved security around the university and an end to what it described as intimidation of its leaders.

Another demand is the payment of 22 months of outstanding 25 and 35 per cent wage awards.

At Ambrose Alli University in Edo State, academic activities have also been disrupted following the commencement of an indefinite strike by ASUU members.

The lecturers cited the failure to implement the 2025 agreement and pay accumulated allowances dating back to January 2026.

The strike followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university authorities and the Edo State Government.

The industrial action covers teaching, examination supervision, statutory meetings and the supervision of students’ research projects, industrial training and teaching practice.

ASUU members have maintained that the strike will continue until their demands are addressed, putting further pressure on affected state governments and university authorities to resolve the disputes.
