Gombe Tertiary Unions Issue 14-Day Strike Ultimatum
The Joint Union of Gombe State Tertiary Institutions has given the state government a 14-day ultimatum to address outstanding salary adjustments, promotions and other welfare entitlements owed to workers in public tertiary institutions.
The unions warned that failure to take concrete steps within the period could lead to an indefinite strike.
The ultimatum followed a joint meeting held on Friday, August 14. The body comprises the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.
While acknowledging Governor Muhammadu Yahaya’s efforts in sustaining tertiary education, the unions said several critical welfare issues remain unresolved despite repeated engagements. They noted that the prolonged delay has caused economic hardship for workers and reduced staff morale.
Key demands include the implementation of the consolidated ₦70,000 national minimum wage and its consequential adjustments, as well as the approved 25 per cent and 35 per cent CONPCASS/CONTISS salary reviews. The unions also called for payment of outstanding promotion arrears, annual increments and approved allowances.
They stressed that the ultimatum is not meant to undermine their relationship with the government but to draw attention to long-standing issues. The unions said they remain open to dialogue, yet warned that unsatisfactory action within the 14 days would force them to begin an indefinite strike without further notice.
