Edo Assembly Speaker Resigns Amid Impeachment Speculation
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid reports of moves by lawmakers to remove him from the position.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed on Monday by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, in a Facebook post, although she said further details would be released later.
Following his resignation, Yekini Idaiyi, who represents Akoko Edo II Constituency, was reportedly sworn in as the new Speaker of the Assembly.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, became Speaker of the eighth Assembly in June 2023.
His leadership of the House had faced challenges since May 2024, when he suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other principal officers.
At the time, Agbebaku reportedly alleged that external forces were behind the move to remove him and claimed that charms and ritual items had been brought into the Assembly complex.
The lawmakers who were suspended were reportedly aligned with Philip Shaibu, the former deputy governor of Edo State and an associate of Adams Oshiomhole.
The circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s latest resignation and the reported change in leadership are expected to become clearer as the Assembly provides further details.
