The Economic Community of West African States has shortlisted 60 startups from more than 6,000 applications for its regional startup awards programme.

The selected startups emerged from an extensive screening process involving young entrepreneurs across the ECOWAS region, with the initiative aimed at promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and digital transformation.

The programme is designed to identify promising businesses developing technology-driven solutions to challenges affecting communities and economies across West Africa.

According to the organisers, the large number of applications received demonstrates the growing interest in entrepreneurship and technology among young people in the region.

The shortlisted startups will proceed to the next stage of the programme, where they will have the opportunity to showcase their innovations, business models and potential impact.

The initiative is also expected to provide participants with greater visibility, networking opportunities and access to potential investors and business partners.

ECOWAS said the programme forms part of its broader efforts to support young entrepreneurs, strengthen the region’s startup ecosystem and encourage the development of innovative solutions capable of driving economic growth.

The regional body emphasised the importance of empowering startups and young innovators as part of efforts to create jobs, expand digital opportunities and improve economic integration across West Africa.

The final winners of the awards are expected to emerge after further evaluation of the shortlisted startups, with recognition and other opportunities available to outstanding participants.
