Nigerian athlete, Temitope Simbiat Adeshina has created history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by securing a bronze medal in the women’s high jump event, bringing an end to Nigeria’s 72-year wait for a Commonwealth high jump medal.

Adeshina cleared a height of 1.90 meters to secure third place in a competitive final, finishing behind Australia’s Eleanor Patterson, who took gold, and Nicola Olyslagers, who took silver.

With this performance, Adeshina became the first Nigerian woman ever to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the high jump.

Her bronze achievement marks the first time a Nigerian athlete has stood on a Commonwealth high jump podium since Emmanuel Ifeajuna won gold at the 1954 Games in Vancouver (and Josiah Majekodunmi’s silver in 1950). The feat highlights significant personal progress for the national record holder, who finished 10th in her Commonwealth Games debut four years earlier, and adds another major milestone to Team Nigeria’s athletics campaign in Glasgow.
