Former Kano LG Chairman Returns to Tailoring After Removal From Office

Abdullahi Gali Shitu, popularly known as Comrade Abdullahi Gali Basaf, the former Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area in Kano State, has resumed his tailoring trade months after being removed from office by a court judgment.

Basaf, who served as council chairman until March 2026, explained that his decision to return to his sewing shop was aimed at proving that political office should never be treated as a full-time profession or a person’s sole means of survival.

Speaking on his transition, the former local government boss emphasized that politicians ought to maintain sustainable sources of income outside government, viewing political appointments and elective positions as temporary opportunities to serve the public rather than permanent careers. He noted that having a personal livelihood prevents undue reliance on public funds and protects former officials from financial hardship once they leave office.

Basaf disclosed that tailoring has been his primary profession for over a decade, providing the financial stability needed to fund his political activities, support his campaigns, and sustain his community engagements prior to taking office. Before becoming Kumbotso Local Government chairman, he founded the Kwankwasiyya Reporters platform in 2015, served as Kano State chairman of the Alliance National Party, contested for a Senate seat in 2019, and later served as Senior Special Assistant on Information under the New Nigeria People’s Party.

Reaffirming his pride in manual craftsmanship, he emphasized that tailoring is a highly respectable trade capable of sustaining livelihoods and fostering self-reliance. He urged young people and fellow public office holders to acquire practical vocational skills, demonstrating that returning to honest work after public service is a badge of honor rather than a setback.
