United States President, Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu for his decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and addressing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly efforts aimed at protecting Christian communities from violence.

In a letter dated July 6, 2026 publicized by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga Trump reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to standing alongside Nigeria in combating extremism and promoting regional stability.

Emphasizing the vital nature of the US-Nigeria bilateral relationship amidst spreading West African conflicts, Trump highlighted the role of the historic US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap in establishing a strategic operational framework.

As part of this security partnership, Trump noted that elite US Special Operations Forces have been deployed to train, equip, and provide intelligence support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria. According to the Presidency, enhanced collaboration through a Joint Working Group co-chaired by both countries’ National Security Advisers has already yielded significant tactical outcomes, including a joint May 16 operation in the Lake Chad region that eliminated top ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki alongside several lieutenants.

The endorsement follows a recent official visit to Abuja by US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, who pledged further support across defense and key economic sectors.
