The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, on Tuesday dismissed reports suggesting he plans to resign from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, describing the claims as false and warning that legal action would be taken against those responsible for spreading them.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the minister said his visit was solely to brief the President on the country’s current security situation.

He said the President expressed satisfaction with the progress being recorded by the armed forces and encouraged them to sustain ongoing efforts against insecurity.

The minister thanked Nigerians for their continued support of the military, noting that public cooperation has played a vital role in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other security threats.

According to him, addressing insecurity requires a collective effort involving citizens, communities and security agencies, adding that the country’s security situation has continued to improve.

Reacting to the resignation rumours, the minister said he had never contemplated leaving office and had no knowledge of the source of the reports.

He described the speculation as shocking and baseless, stressing that there had been no discussion at any time about stepping down from his position.

The minister also disclosed that those behind the false claims would face legal action, insisting that misinformation should not be allowed to undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace and security.

He further alleged that some individuals were uncomfortable with the security gains being recorded and were attempting to create a contrary impression through the circulation of false information.
