Ferran Torres has once more proven why he is regarded as one of the most lethal impact players in world football, coming off the bench to score the decisive goal as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The Barcelona forward, who started the game among the substitutes as coach Luis de la Fuente kept faith with the same eleven that dismantled France in the semifinal, was introduced later in the contest and needed only moments to make his mark on football history.

With the match locked at 0-0 deep into extra time, Nico Williams made a brilliant run in behind the Argentine defence before nodding the ball back into the path of Torres, who met it with a stunning half-volley that flew beyond the reach of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the 106th minute.

The goal proved decisive in a final that had been tightly contested for long spells, with Argentina forced to play the closing stages of both regulation and extra time with ten men after Enzo Fernandez was shown a second yellow card.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Lionel Scaloni’s side dug in defensively, but they could not withstand a Spanish side that dominated proceedings with 65 percent possession and 20 attempts on goal compared to just two for their South American opponents.

For Torres, the moment adds yet another remarkable chapter to a career already defined by his eye for the big occasion, having previously delivered similar match winning contributions off the bench for both club and country.

His finish in New Jersey now stands as arguably the most significant of them all, sealing Spain’s second World Cup triumph and their first since the famous triumph of 2010 in South Africa.

The victory crowns a golden period for Spanish football under De la Fuente, who has now led the national team to both European and world glory within the space of two years. Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Dani Olmo and the rest of a talented Spanish generation can now call themselves world champions, with Torres once again showing that a super sub role can carry just as much weight as a starting berth when it matters most.
