Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Burna Boy and Colombian superstar, Shakira delivered an unforgettable performance of their global hit, Dai Dai at the maiden halftime show in FIFA World Cup final history, turning MetLife Stadium into a sea of colour and sound as Spain battled Argentina for football’s biggest prize on Sunday.

The duo, who first introduced the world to their infectious anthem at the tournament’s opening ceremony in Mexico City back in June, returned for an even grander spectacle at the final, joined on stage by dancers drawn from Shakira’s viral Dai Dai Challenge as well as Uganda’s beloved Ghetto Kids, who have featured prominently throughout the song’s rollout.

The performance blended Shakira’s Latin flair with Burna Boy’s Afrobeats energy, wrapping the stadium in vibrant visuals and rhythms that had fans on their feet long before the second half kicked off.

Their appearance formed part of a landmark halftime show that also featured Madonna, BTS and Justin Bieber, marking the first time FIFA has staged a full scale entertainment spectacle at the midpoint of a World Cup final.

For Shakira, the moment extended her storied history with the tournament, having previously lit up the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with the iconic Waka Waka, a song that remains one of the most streamed World Cup anthems ever released.

Dai Dai itself has enjoyed a remarkable run since its release in May, climbing the Billboard Hot 100 and dominating global streaming charts for weeks on end. Beyond its commercial success, the song carries a charitable mission, with royalties and proceeds channelled into the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative aiming to raise one hundred million dollars to expand access to education and football for children in underserved communities worldwide.

True to that spirit, Shakira, Burna Boy and their fellow performers waived their usual fees for the final showcase, donating their time and talent to the cause.

As the closing credits rolled on a performance already being hailed across social media as one of the standout moments of the tournament, it capped a night that fused football and music on the grandest possible stage, with Burna Boy once again flying the Nigerian flag high on the world’s biggest sporting platform.
