I’ve Never Dated a Man Who Asked Me for Money, Says Toke Makinwa
Media personality, Toke Makinwa has declared that she has never been in a relationship where a man asked her for money, describing such a request as an instant deal breaker were it ever to happen.
The broadcaster and podcaster made the comments during a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, which featured reality television star Mercy Eke as a guest.
Speaking candidly during the conversation, Makinwa explained her stance on financial expectations in relationships, stating that whatever a man earns, he should be willing to give a substantial portion to his partner, illustrating her point by saying that a man earning N5,000 should be prepared to give at least N3,000.
She was firm that the reverse dynamic, a man turning to her for financial help, was not something she could accept, insisting that the day such a request came, it would mark the end of the relationship for her.
The discussion formed part of a broader reflection on dating and the expectations many women hold about how men should show up financially in relationships.
Makinwa and Eke touched on the pressures women face in modern dating culture, with the podcaster maintaining that a man’s willingness to provide is a fundamental marker of a serious and respectful relationship in her view.
The comments quickly gained traction online after being shared, with the clip amassing thousands of likes and comments as social media users weighed in on both sides of the debate. While some praised Makinwa for being upfront about her standards, others criticised her remarks as promoting a transactional view of relationships, a theme that has followed the media personality in previous public conversations about love, money and modern dating expectations among Nigerian women.
