Man Jailed 7 Years for Advertising Cannabis Online
A 28-year-old man, Ashiru Idris, has been sentenced to seven years in prison without the option of a fine for advertising cannabis sativa for sale on social media.
The Federal High Court in Kano delivered the judgment on July 14, 2026. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested Idris in April after a video showing him publicly advertising the substance circulated online.
The court convicted Idris based on evidence presented by the NDLEA. The agency described the judgment as a strong warning to individuals who promote illegal drugs on public platforms. The commander of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, CN DY Lawal, said the case reinforces the agency’s resolve to confront drug offenders who use social media to advertise prohibited substances.
The NDLEA urged members of the public to support efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse by providing credible information to security agencies.
The conviction is part of ongoing operations to reduce the spread of illegal drugs through digital platforms. Many have welcomed the judgment as a step toward curbing online promotion of banned substances.
The case has sparked conversations about the dangers of using social media to advertise drugs. Authorities continue to monitor online platforms for such activities. The NDLEA said it will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
This landmark ruling is expected to serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities. The agency remains committed to protecting the public from the harmful effects of drug abuse and trafficking.
The judgment highlights the serious legal consequences of promoting illegal substances in Nigeria.
