Lagos Court Sentences 16 People for Illegal Waste Disposal

The special offences and mobile court in Oshodi has convicted 16 individuals for illegal waste disposal and other environmental violations in Lagos.

The offenders were sentenced to four months’ imprisonment each after being found guilty on multiple counts. The cases were brought by the Lagos Waste Management Authority for breaching the state’s environmental sanitation laws.

The convicted persons were arrested during surveillance operations in areas like Gbagada expressway, Anthony Oke, Oworonshoki, and Bariga. They were caught dumping refuse on road medians, drainage channels, and other unauthorised locations.

The offences included indiscriminate waste disposal, failure to use approved waste collectors, and other related infractions.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, said the convictions show the government’s determination to enforce environmental laws. He warned that the days of dumping waste without facing consequences are over. Gbadegesin encouraged residents and businesses to register with their assigned waste operators and dispose of waste properly.

The Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, Mukaila Sanusi, explained that the agency is intensifying surveillance and enforcement to keep Lagos cleaner. He stressed that waste management is a shared responsibility between the government and the public. LAWMA will continue working with other agencies to maintain high environmental standards across the state.

The latest convictions are part of broader efforts to tackle illegal waste disposal in Lagos. The authority urged members of the public to support the state’s environmental goals by following approved practices and reporting violations. LAWMA remains committed to improving waste management services while ensuring everyone complies with the law.
