Kwara APC Reconciliation Committee Begins Peace Talks After Primary Election Disputes

The Reconciliation Committee of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State has begun efforts to resolve the internal disagreements that emerged after the party’s recently concluded primary elections, urging aggrieved members to embrace dialogue and avoid actions capable of worsening the crisis.

Chairman of the committee, retired Colonel AbdulWahab Ademola Lawal, made the appeal on Wednesday during a press briefing in Ilorin, describing the assignment as demanding but expressing confidence that the committee would restore unity within the party.

Lawal thanked the leader of the APC in the state and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as well as the state party chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, for setting up the committee to reconcile members dissatisfied with the outcome of the primaries.

He said recent public exchanges, rallies and counter-rallies by various factions highlighted the need for immediate intervention to prevent the disagreements from escalating.

According to him, although differences exist among party members, they have remained committed to the APC, describing the situation as an internal family dispute that requires dialogue and understanding rather than confrontation.

Lawal said the committee had been mandated to engage aggrieved members and stakeholders across the state, identify the causes of the disputes, mediate among the parties involved and submit a report containing recommendations to the party’s State Executive Committee.

He assured members that the committee would conduct its assignment with fairness, impartiality and openness while encouraging all stakeholders to cooperate with the reconciliation process.

“We appeal to all aggrieved members to open their hearts and minds as we work towards finding lasting solutions to the current challenges confronting our party,” Lawal said.

He also urged party members to refrain from making inflammatory statements or engaging in actions capable of increasing tensions, stressing that unity is essential for the APC to sustain its electoral strength in Kwara State and prepare for future political contests.

Lawal disclosed that the committee had already commenced its assignment and would hold reconciliation meetings across the state’s three senatorial districts with local government party executives, aspirants, candidates, stakeholders and other interest groups.

He added that the committee would engage members of the G15 both individually and collectively while working with other individuals and groups that had already initiated efforts to restore peace within the party.

The committee chairman commended those independent reconciliation initiatives, saying the committee’s work was intended to strengthen, not replace, ongoing peace efforts.

He also appealed to journalists and social media users to report developments responsibly and avoid publications capable of aggravating tensions, assuring party members that the committee would remain transparent throughout the reconciliation process.
