Nigerian Army Honours Veterans, Personnel at NADCEL Gala Night
The Nigerian Army on Sunday hosted a gala night in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to honour serving personnel and veterans as part of activities marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
The event, held ahead of the grand finale of the week-long celebration, was organised to recognise the sacrifices of military personnel while promoting unity, professionalism and the Army’s commitment to national security.
Speaking at the EUI Event Centre, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, described NADCEL 2026 as another milestone in the Army’s ongoing transformation, noting that the series of activities held across the country reflected its role in promoting national cohesion and stability.
He said the Army’s record of courage, resilience and service in peace support missions across Africa, as well as ongoing internal security operations, had continued to strengthen national security and public confidence in the Armed Forces.
Shaibu paid tribute to fallen soldiers, describing their sacrifices as the foundation upon which the Nigerian Army would continue to build a safer and more secure nation.
He also reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to upholding the Constitution, improving the welfare of its personnel and enhancing its operational capabilities to address emerging security threats.
The Chief of Army Staff further thanked President Bola Tinubu for his continued support, saying the administration’s backing had contributed to improved operational effectiveness, force development and military preparedness across various theatres of operation.
Representing Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, described the gala night as a fitting occasion to celebrate officers and soldiers for their dedication to protecting the country.
He honoured fallen military personnel, expressed support for their families and commended the Nigerian Army’s role in maintaining peace and security in Rivers State through its collaboration with the 6 Division.
Wokoma also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with the Army in areas of logistics, operational support and personnel welfare.
Earlier, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Maj.-Gen. Musa Etsu-Ndagi, said NADCEL 2026 showcased the Army’s operational achievements, humanitarian activities and expanding strategic partnerships.
He acknowledged the humanitarian interventions of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association under the leadership of the wife of the Chief of Army Staff, and also highlighted the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Summit.
Etsu-Ndagi further appreciated the Rivers State Government, African Chiefs of Army Staff, veterans and former ECOMOG Force Commander, Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (retd.), for their contributions to peace and security across the region.
