Naomi Osaka Stuns Sabalenka to Reach Wimbledon Quarter-finals
Naomi Osaka produced a dominant performance to defeat Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets and book her place in the quarter-finals of The Championships, Wimbledon, avenging her defeat to the Belarusian at the French Open in June.
The victory on Centre Court ended Sabalenka’s campaign in the last 16 and secured Osaka’s first win on the iconic court.
The 28-year-old, who won her most recent Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, has now reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals without dropping a set in her opening four matches.
Following the match, Osaka said the victory was especially meaningful because it came on Centre Court and ended a run of three consecutive defeats to Sabalenka.
She also credited her mother’s home-cooked Japanese meals for helping her maintain her form throughout the tournament.
Osaka’s resurgence has continued under coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who previously worked with Iga Świątek. After reaching the semi-finals of the US Open, she has carried that momentum into the 2026 season.
The 14th seed has also attracted attention for her elaborate pre-match outfits, which have included a kimono-inspired ensemble, a bomber jacket with a long train and a cloak resembling an open kimono.
Osaka broke Sabalenka’s serve early in the opening set and maintained aggressive baseline play throughout the contest, unsettling the Belarusian, who struggled to find her rhythm.
The second set was decided by a tie-break, where Osaka ended Sabalenka’s streak of 21 consecutive Grand Slam tie-break victories to seal the match.
Sabalenka had entered the contest after victories over Osaka earlier this year at Indian Wells, Madrid and the French Open. The defeat also ended her run of reaching 14 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals.
Osaka will next face 10th seed Karolína Muchová for a place in the semi-finals.
