Court Condemns Ex-Driver to Death for Murder of Abuja Couple

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Jonathan Marcus to death by hanging for the murder of his former employer, 80-year-old Adebola Ezekiel, and his wife, Abiodun Ezekiel.

The couple were killed at their residence in the Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, on April 1, 2024, leading to an investigation by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

According to the police, Marcus fled to Obajana in Kogi State after the incident but was later tracked down, arrested and returned to Abuja for prosecution.

Investigators said the convict confessed to entering the couple’s residence at about 11 p.m. on the night of the attack and killing them.

Police also disclosed that Marcus had previously worked as the couple’s driver but was dismissed following repeated disagreements with his employers.

He was subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court, where the prosecution presented evidence in support of the charges.

After considering the evidence and arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, the court held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Marcus to death by hanging.

Reacting to the judgment, the FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the Federal Capital Territory, assuring residents that criminal offences would continue to be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
