Sanwo-Olu Orders Expedited Waste Evacuation Across Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following the recent accumulation of refuse in some communities.

The governor disclosed this in a statement shared on his official Facebook page, assuring residents that relevant agencies have intensified efforts to clear waste backlogs and restore environmental cleanliness across affected areas.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources are working round the clock to address the situation.

He stated that additional trucks and personnel had been deployed to support ongoing cleanup efforts in affected neighbourhoods, adding that residents should begin to notice improvements across the state.

“We have deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear the backlogs across all affected neighbourhoods. You should already see progress on the streets and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, describing waste management in the state as a significant undertaking that requires sustained commitment and collaboration.

Despite the challenges, he assured residents that the state government remains determined to resolve the current waste management concerns.

The governor also appealed to residents to support the ongoing efforts by disposing of waste responsibly, properly bagging refuse and avoiding indiscriminate dumping in drainage channels and on roads.

“As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment, urging Lagosians to work collectively towards sustaining environmental sanitation across the state.

The renewed cleanup campaign comes amid growing concerns over refuse accumulation in parts of Lagos, with residents in some communities calling for intensified waste evacuation efforts.
